en català
Catalan syllabification has unique rules that differ from Spanish and French.
Catalan diphthongs — ai, ei, oi, au, eu, iu, ui — count as one syllable. They are very common in Catalan and must not be separated.
When two vowels are adjacent but each belongs to a different syllable. In Catalan, hiatus is common after certain prefixes and in many nouns.
The Catalan "l·l" (geminated l) counts as one consonant and does not affect syllable count. "col·legi" splits as col-le-gi (3 syllables).
Unstressed 'a' and 'e' in Catalan are reduced to a neutral vowel (schwa). They still count as a syllable — they are not silent like French e muet.
The 10-syllable verse — most important meter in classical Catalan poetry. Used by Verdaguer, Ausiàs March, and Llull. This tool flags decasíl·labs automatically.
In spoken Catalan poetry, final vowel of one word can merge with initial vowel of the next (similar to Spanish synalepha). This affects verse counting.
